I’ve wanted to visit Carcassonne for quite some time after learning about it on a travel show (and playing the board game countless times) but it always seemed so out of the way. We caught a glimpse of the gigantic fortress looming in the distance from the freeway on our way to Basque Country, so we thought it would be a perfect stop for lunch on our journey back to Bologna.
Despite some sections of Carcassone dating back to 100 BC, the city feels more like a movie set thanks to “recent” renovations (it still baffles me that 1853 is considered recent in Europe). After chowing down on the city’s specialty dish, cassoulet, we wandered around the cobble stoned streets before getting back on the road towards Nice.
Awesome. They sure don’t build them like this anymore, lol. I remember being in Ireland and seeing the castles and how they don’t tear anything down but re-use and re-re-re-re-use and this to me is beauty.
